After-School Program to Serve 700 Students
More than 700 students at nine La Puente schools are scheduled to participate this fall in a free after-school program designed to improve scholastic achievement and curb dropout rates and drug use.
Building Responsible Individuals Determined to Grow and Experience Success, or BRIDGES, is funded by a three-year, $2.4-million grant from the state to the Hacienda La Puente Unified School District.
The projects will be at California, Lassalette, Nelson, Sparks, Sunset, Temple and Workman elementary schools; Sparks Middle School and Fairgrove Academy. Students will be chosen based on their parents’ child care and economic needs as well as the risk for dropping out of school, officials said.
The program will provide homework assistance, recreational activities and field trips each day from 3 to 6 p.m.
