HUNTINGTON BEACH

As officials at the county registrar’s office count signatures on a petition by Huntington Beach residents to prevent a Wal-Mart from moving into their neighborhood, Wal-Mart developers are moving forward with their plans to demolish the school that sits on the site so that they can build the store.

Opponents say they have enough signatures for a ballot initiative aimed at stopping the store plan on Talbert Avenue, said Marvin Josephson, who heads the grass-roots group Crest View United. About 15,000 signatures from registered voters are required to force a special election on the issue, which could be held as early as December, city officials said.

Gail Hutton, Huntington Beach city attorney, said Thursday that Wal-Mart’s request to begin demolition and move forward with its plans is lawful.
