The City Council on Tuesday formally accepted $400,000 in aid from the state for the Hefley Street water tank, which ruptured in September.

Gov. Gray Davis approved the grant to replace the water tank in the new state budget.

The city has not yet decided whether a second, empty reservoir structurally similar to the Hefley Street tank should be replaced or repaired. Officials are awaiting the results of a study by engineers and a request for federal assistance before making a decision.

The city, however, already has determined three possible locations for a new water tank: at the east side of Hoover Street, south of Hazard Avenue; at Beach Boulevard and Edinger Avenue; and the existing site of the second tank on 23rd Street and Monroe Street. See related story, B10.
