Share

The distinctive Spanish Colonial Revival tile and pottery produced in the 1920s and ‘30s on Catalina Island is enjoying a renaissance in its place of origin.

On Wednesday the Catalina Island Museum takes prized pieces out of storage for a monthlong exhibit. The museum, which is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily in Avalon’s Casino Building and which charges $2 admission, also plans special events linked to the exhibit. Telephone (310) 510-2414.

And starting in mid-September, workers are to begin installing 140 feet of tile murals along Via Casino Way, Avalon’s harbor-side walkway. The murals, depicting 24 nostalgic scenes inspired by Avalon postcards of the 1930s, are framed by Catalina-style tile. Created in Ojai, Calif., by RTK Studios, they are to be dedicated Sept. 30.
