Auntie’s Cake, by the Numbers

DEAR SOS: As a Weight-Watcher, I need to count calories, total fat grams and fiber of foods. Would it be possible for you to reprint this old Los Angeles Times recipe for Auntie’s Health Cake, with nutritional facts listed?

DEAR JEAN: Why not? We’re happy to resurrect this former “My Best Recipe” column winner, which goes back to 1977, when sugarless cakes were considered healthful.

Auntie’s Health Cake

Active Work Time: 15 minutes * Total Preparation Time: 1 hour

2 1/4 cups whole-wheat flour

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, room temperature

1 cup molasses

1 egg

1 cup unsweetened applesauce

3/4 cup raisins

* Combine flour, cinnamon, baking soda and salt in mixing bowl. Cut in butter using pastry blender. Add molasses, egg and applesauce. Beat well. Stir in raisins. Pour into greased and floured 8-inch square pan. Bake at 350 degrees until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean, 40 to 45 minutes. Turn out on cake rack to cool. Cut into squares.

8 servings. Each serving: 380 calories; 439 mg sodium; 58 mg cholesterol; 13 grams fat; 65 grams carbohydrates; 6 grams protein; 1.07 grams fiber.
