Esperanza Beats Anaheim in Final Minute

Doug Brown made a three-pointer with 25 seconds left to give Esperanza a 55-54 victory over host Anaheim in the quarterfinals of the Taco Company Invitational Thursday.

Robert Mendoza missed two free throws with no time left for Anaheim (1-1).

Brown had 24 points to lead the Aztecs (2-0), who play Servite in the semifinals at 7:30 tonight at Anaheim.

Stephen Miller had 25 points for Anaheim, which plays Whittier California at 6 tonight in a consolation game.

In other Taco Company games:

Troy 73, Loara 34--Mike Leslie scored 27 points, including six three-pointers, for Troy (2-0), which went on a 10-2 run in the first quarter and outscored Loara 22-9 in the second quarter. The Saxons are 1-1.

Woodbridge 79, Canyon 43--Dan Lambert scored 20 points and Doug Koeller scored 14 for Woodbridge (1-1). Canyon falls to 0-2.

In the Bolsa Grande tournament:

Los Alamitos 85, Savanna 53--Ron Prettyman had 22 points and five assists, and Ryan Keller had 19 points and eight assists for Los Alamitos (2-0), which plays Bolsa Grande in the semifinals tonight. Savanna falls to 0-2.

University 87, Santa Ana Valley 45--Andy Lawrence scored 34 points, including five three-pointers, to lead University (1-1). Santa Ana Valley is 0-2.

In the Coyote Classic:

Magnolia 53, Sunny Hills 29--Geoffrey Clayton scored 15 points and Scot Henry scored 14 to lead Magnolia (1-1). Eric Hardeman had 12 points for Sunny Hills (0-2), which trailed, 31-8, at halftime.

In the Orange Lutheran tournament:

Orange 58, La Mirada 47--Blake Dodge scored 23 points, including three three-pointers, for Orange. Bayron Ortega had 10 rebounds and scored eight points for the Panthers.

Aliso Niguel 69, San Marcos 65--Brandon Sievers scored 19 points and was 10 for 10 from the free-throw line for the visiting Wolverines (1-1). San Marcos is 1-1.

In the Lady Centurion girls’ tournament:

Irvine 69, Santa Ana Valley 54--Ali Grechko scored 10 of her 22 points in the third quarter for Irvine (2-0). Carina Martinez scored 11 points for Santa Ana Valley (1-2).

In the Vernie Ford tournament:

Aliso Niguel 39, Western 23--Freshman Julia Pederson scored 19 points and had five steals for Aliso Niguel (2-0).

Santiago 58, Loara 42--Stephanie Reupena led Santiago (2-0) with 22 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. Vivi Mai had 20 points for host Loara (2-1).

Valencia 53, Norco 46--Monica Jackley scored 27 points and had 14 rebounds to lead Valencia (3-0) past Norco (2-1). Sandy Harris added five points and 11 rebounds.
