Gerald L. Haas Sr.; Postal Worker, Union Leader

Gerald Lorenz Haas Sr., a postal worker, died Nov. 26 in Ojai Valley Community Hospital. He was 52.

He was born on May 7, 1947, in Pontiac, Ill., where he grew up and attended school.

When he was about 19, he joined the Marine Corps.

After military service, Haas moved to Ventura County and became a postal employee. He worked in Oxnard, east Ventura and west Ventura. He was also a postal union leader.

Haas was active in the Liberal Catholic Church of Ojai and was a subdeacon.

Family members and friends remember him as a compassionate, friendly and loving man who had a deep respect for nature and all forms of life. He enjoyed gardening and was an avid reader. He also had a wonderful sense of humor.

Haas was preceded in death by his wife of 20 years, Ellen Gail Haas, and two brothers, Pete and Leo.

He is survived by daughters Deborah Frances Loughran of Ventura and Molly Beth Haas of Oak View; son Gerald Jr. of Oak View; sisters Rose Marie Hutchinson of Sacramento and Bonnie Ruth Haas of King City; brother William Joseph Haas of Casitas Springs; and a grandson, Jadon Christopher Loughran of Ventura.

Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. today at Meditation Mount in upper Ojai with the Rev. Scott Harrell of Ojai Valley Baptist Church officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Joseph P. Reardon Funeral Home in Ventura.
