IRVINE

To keep pace with the expanding Irvine Spectrum Center, a new police sergeant, two additional officers and a larger police substation will make their debut at the regional entertainment mall in the next few months.

“Primarily, the action we see out there is still fairly high,” said Police Chief Charles S. Brobeck. “With the opening of new businesses, like the Crazy Horse Salon, Gameworks and the Improv coming in there, we’re anticipating many more people and may see crime increase slightly.”

Irvine police already have a small storefront operation at the Spectrum Center, next to Brookstone and near the movie theater. Three officers do foot patrol there on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. On a typical Saturday night, 15,000 to 25,000 people converge upon the Spectrum, according to the Irvine Co., which owns the mall.
