Ramsay Sees the Potential

Hall of Fame coach Jack Ramsay, who had not seen that much of the Clippers before Monday night, was eager to watch the team’s young talent and rookie Lamar Odom play against the Miami Heat.

“I get very good reports on [Odom] and from what I’ve seen, it’s almost spectacular,” said Ramsay, in his eighth season as a broadcaster for the Heat. “He would appear to have a great future, but I’d like to see him play a half-dozen games or back-to-back nights.”

Ramsay likes the Clippers’ potential if the team is allowed to grow together.

“They have a lot of young guys,” Ramsay said of the Clippers, who average 25 years and 65 days, the youngest team in the league.

The Clippers entered Monday’s game with a five-game losing streak but only a few players stayed late after Sunday’s practice to work on areas that need improvement.

Derek Anderson, who started at point guard against the Heat, and Eric Piatkowski, who made his third start at shooting guard, worked with assistant coach Rex Kalamian. Charles Jones, Nesby and Hudson shot jump shots on their own after practice.

The Clippers, who had more different starting lineups than any NBA team last season, went with their seventh different unit in 17 games against Miami. Olowokandi started at center, Taylor and Odom at forwards, and Anderson and Piatkowski at guards. . . . The Clippers completed their second longest homestand of the season with a 0-5 record. Next is a three-game trip, beginning with a game Wednesday at Atlanta, then Friday at Detroit and Saturday at Indiana.

The last Clipper triple-double was done by Mark Jackson on March 13, 1994, against Golden State.
