Richard Tyler’s Gift for the Holidays: A Collection for This Season

Los Angeles designer Richard Tyler bucked tradition Wednesday night with a fashion show for clothes needed here and now.

The runway show featured an extended men’s holiday collection, shown to a standing-room-only crowd at the Tyler boutique on Beverly Boulevard.

The menswear was fab, as in ‘60s fab-ulous, full of mod turtlenecks, groovy jackets and bright colors. Models included actor Alex Desert (“Swingers” and TV’s “Becker”), fun girl Jenny McCarthy and her husband, director John Asher, and members of the band Phantom Planet (Jason Schwartzman of “Rushmore,” Sam Farrar and Jacques Brautbar). Gina Gershon and Patrick Stewart were in the audience (and Stewart was taking copious notes).

The word is that Tyler wasn’t expecting to do such a large collection, but in the last few months, requests have been pouring in for men’s holiday clothes.

His celebrity clientele continues to grow, with country-music star Tim McGraw and Bond-man Pierce Brosnan. Tyler has also designed Stewart’s wardrobe for the upcoming movie “X-Men.”

The Tyler store opened in 1989 as a men’s boutique, but so many women requested tailored clothes that he started a women’s collection as well.

The collection is only available at the boutique.

They Love Red: The votes are in for the Alize “Operation Redhead” survey, and the country’s favorite redhead is, no surprise, TV legend Lucille Ball. A national survey of 2,000 women found that Bette Midler is No. 2 and Nicole Kidman No. 3. Perhaps the most surprising result is that Wilma Flintstone (tied for No. 6 with Molly Ringwald and Ginger Spice) and Jane Jetson (No. 7) beat out “Gilligan’s Island’s” Tina Louise (tied for No. 8 with Gillian Anderson and Claire Danes)--even though Flintstone and Jetson had help from some of the industry’s most remarkable colorists!

Least favorite redhead is Tori Spelling of “Beverly Hills 90210” fame. Spelling is not a natural redhead. In fact, she said earlier this year, the reason her character is leaving the long-running TV melodrama is because she’s gone through every hair color imaginable. A close second to Spelling is the annoying stand-up comic Carrot Top.

Alize is a hair color line from Kobrand Corp. in France.

Diva Nails: If you want to look like Mariah Carey, here’s your chance. OK, maybe it’s just your nails that will look like the diva’s. Celebrity manicurist Deborah Lippmann is scheduled to give free mini-manicures at Fred Segal Essentials in Santa Monica from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Dec. 18. Lippman is promoting her polish and treatment line, lippman collection. No reservations are necessary.
