Robert Mitchum’s Son Ends Candidacy

State Assembly candidate Chris Mitchum has decided to drop his bid to unseat Assemblywoman Hannah-Beth Jackson (D-Santa Barbara) in next year’s election.

In a statement released Thursday, Mitchum, a Santa Barbara Republican and son of the late movie star Robert Mitchum, cited a desire to spend time with his young adult children and to campaign on behalf of an unspecified presidential candidate.

Mitchum said he would support Santa Paula City Councilwoman Robin Sullivan, who is seeking the Republican nomination for the 35th Assembly District seat. Mitchum criticized Jackson, a lawyer aligned with environmentalists, for what he described as a “big government agenda,” and said he would support Sullivan because she is “one of us.”

Mitchum ran unsuccessfully against Jackson in 1998. The district encompasses portions of Santa Barbara and Ventura counties, including the cities of Ojai, Santa Paula and Ventura.
