Photos of Flora and Fauna on Hawaii’s Garden Isle

Kauai, nicknamed the Garden Island, will be the setting for a photo safari June 3 to 11 led by outdoor photographer Linda DeLay-Joseph. Participants will photograph birds and landscapes and will hike in the Alakai Swamp with wildlife biologist and bird photographer Jack Jeffrey.

The safari will also include kayaking on the Hanalei River; a helicopter excursion around the island; a boat tour along the Na Pali Coast, Kalalau Beach and through sea caves; and visits to Waimea Canyon, Barking Sands Beach and the Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge.

This workshop is appropriate for all levels of physical and photographic ability and includes slide presentations with intermediate and advanced photo techniques discussed and demonstrated.

Australia: Wine

Wine director Peter Marks of Draeger’s Markets in the San Francisco Bay Area and Travel Wizards of Burlingame, Calif., are hosting a wine and culinary tour of Australia. The tour departs April 30 for 10 nights.

Guests will visit three wine regions--Yarra, Barossa and Hunter Valley--and stop at 14 wineries. In Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney, guests will dine in specialty restaurants.

Italy: It’s the Food

Culinary Adventures is offering an exploration of Tuscan culinary heritage and its historical influences. An anthropologist and chef will accompany the group on the tour, which runs March 5 to 11. Guests will try old and new Tuscan specialties and learn about their history. Day trips to medieval abbeys, ruins and other historic sites are included.

Italy: History

Two 15-day tours of the Cinque Terre and the hill towns of Tuscany and Umbria are available May 30 and Sept. 5 with Prof. Benzi Cultural Tours. Alberto Benzi, a retired humanities professor, will guide travelers on a cruise along the cliffs of the Cinque Terre and walks through the five villages that make up this area.

Guests will also take a boat ride on Lake Maggiore and a walking tour of Venice; taste the wines of Montepulciano and San Gimignano; tour the medieval hill towns of Orvieto and Assisi; see the museums and historical sites in Florence, Pisa and Verona; and cross the border to Locarno, Switzerland. “The Pearls of Northern Italy” tour will include lectures at churches, museums and castles.

East Coast: Florals

The Massachusetts Horticultural Society is planning a garden tour of Charleston, S.C., and Savannah, Ga., from April 4 to 10.

Charleston stops include the Drayton Hall plantation, the Middleton Place gardens, the Barbados Tropical Garden and the Charleston Aquatic Nurseries.

In Savannah, Bonaventure Cemetery and the University of Georgia’s bamboo farm and coastal garden are on the list.

India: Vegetarians

Adventure Health Travel based in Ashland, Ore., is offering a 14-day trip to savor the tastes of India. The tour begins March 5 in New Delhi.

The group will travel with a vegetarian cook. The itinerary includes lodging in palaces; tours of Udaipur, Jaipur and New Delhi; tours of an ayurvedic center; and a visit to a temple that teaches the ancient Sanskrit language.

Also included is an overnight safari at Manwar Desert Camp to visit Jain temples. Transportation will be by private van, Jeep, elephant (a brief ride), plane and train. Distances driven will be no more than five to six hours.

Norway: Cruise

Take a scenic journey through the Norwegian fiords April 3 to 13. During the time on board there will be lectures on Norwegian fishing traditions, historic polar expeditions and the history of coastal voyages.

The cruise sails from Bergen to Trondheim to see the Geiranger fiord.
