Milan Hejduk’s goal 1:36 into overtime made Patrick Roy the NHL’s third winningest goaltender as the Colorado Avalanche beat the Canucks, 3-2, Sunday night at Vancouver, Canada.

After the Canucks rallied to tie the game with two third-period goals, Hejduk scored just inside the post.

The Avalanche, who have won four of their last five games, moved three points ahead of the Canucks in Northwest Division standings.

Roy stopped 22 shots to win his 424th game and pass Tony Esposito for third place on the all-time win list. Roy is now 10 wins from matching Jacques Plante for second place. Terry Sawchuk leads all goalies with 447 victories.

The injury-depleted Canucks were missing six regulars, including captain Mark Messier (right knee) and Alexander Mogilny (back).

Calgary 2, Chicago 1--Jason Wiemer scored on a 50-foot slap shot with 1:36 left in regulation to give the Flames a victory at Chicago.

Wiemer’s shot deflected off defenseman Anders Eriksson and off the glove of Chicago goaltender Jocelyn Thibault, making his first appearance since breaking his ring finger Nov. 27.

Earlier Sunday, the Blackhawks named Mike Smith the team’s manager of hockey operations. Although Bob Pulford retains the titles of general manager and head coach, Smith will oversee the Blackhawks’ player personnel moves and development.
