The Planning Commission delayed a decision to light up two additional sports fields at Youth Athletic Park on Olympiad Road after about 70 residents came to the Monday meeting to oppose the proposal.

Residents complained that the lights, which would be lit until 10 p.m. up to six days a week, and the additional noise from games at the park would create a nuisance and lower property values.

The recreation department proposed the additional lighting in response to the increased need in the community for sports facilities. The two baseball fields that would be lighted would be used by Little League baseball teams with participants ranging in age from 13 to 16 years old.

The Planning Commission continued the item until Feb. 28 to allow for further study on the environmental impacts of the additional lighting and to look into the possibility of lighting fields at local high schools and intermediate schools.
