It Could Have Been a Boogie Night at the Coconut

Share

Word has it the Boogie Knights, who were scheduled to perform at the Coconut Club on New Year’s Eve, got canned because of poor advance ticket sales. Too bad, they coulda been contenders. What the promoters with the pre-holiday jitters-bug gotta remember is that those crazy Hollywood kids don’t even start thinking about New Year’s Eve until after Christmas, when they see what kinda change they got left in their pockets. Whether it’s 1983 or 1999, the numbers don’t particularly matter when you’re living la vida loca Hollywood style. . . . . Speaking of Hollywood style, promoter Mark Bruser and his homeboy D.K. (Cat Club, the Gate) took over every inch of the Hyatt on Sunset Boulevard (which underwent recent renovations) for New Year’s weekend. So, iffin I was you, I’d either get me a room or look both ways before crossing the Strip. They’re offering three packages for a two-night stay, ranging from $995 to $1,999. For more info, call (310) 289-4994. . . . The Viper Room just confirmed Fishbone for New Year’s Eve, a band that’s sure to attract a few famous friends . . . Lastly, ‘tis the season to remember that while accidents do happen, most can be avoided. Each New Year’s I remember promoter Jac Zinder, who was killed in 1994 by a seasonal drunk driver. The point being, get thee a limo, go on foot, tool around on a recumbent bicycle, ride public transit (MTA buses and trains are free from 11 a.m. New Year’s Eve ‘til 5 a.m. Jan. 1) or designate a special sober someone. After all, New Year’s is for celebrating, not mourning.

Boogie Knights--The Dec. 31 performance by Boogie Knights at the Coconut Club has not been canceled, as reported in Thursday’s Calendar Weekend. The Beverly Hilton Hotel canceled its Gala Millennium Party, but the Coconut Club--a venue within the hotel--still will host a New Year’s Eve party featuring the band.
