Negotiators for the police officers association said Wednesday that they are considering Mayor Michael L. Maertzweiler’s invitation to return to the bargaining table.

Adam Marangell, the lawyer representing the association, said he is reviewing the negotiation guidelines set Monday by the City Council before making a move.

Union negotiators rejected the latest contract offer made by the city last month. City officials said they are ready to continue the talks as soon as the association is ready.

If the new contract is signed by Saturday, the council has authorized the police officers to receive retroactive salary increases. The previous contract expired in September.

The city is offering the association a contract that includes an 11% salary and compensation increase over three years. For example, police officers could get a 5% raise during the first year of the contract, a 4% increase in the second year and a 2% increase in the last year, said City Administrator Robert D’Amato.
