Leisure World residents require an additional 37,700 square feet for indoor recreational facilities, according to results of a study presented Thursday by Professional Community Management officials.

The study determined the need by looking at attendance levels in the various recreational facilities in Leisure World, analyst Cynthia Grace said.

Out of the 37,700 square feet of additional space to be built in the Gate 12 area, the study recommends that 7,000 square feet be allocated for table tennis, 14,000 square feet for an exercise and fitness center, 8,000 square feet for multipurpose use and 8,700 square feet for service and circulation uses such as cafeterias, stairs, elevators and restrooms.

Some residents have voiced opposition to the project, saying they would like to vote on it before any final decisions are made.
