Two Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies fatally shot a man suspected of a carjacking after he allegedly pointed a handgun at them, authorities said Friday.
Deputies shot the man, described as in his 30s, at the Antelope Valley Mall parking lot about 9:40 p.m. Thursday, the Sheriff’s Department said. The man’s name was not released.
The man was wanted in connection with a carjacking at the John Jay Inn and Suites in Lancaster earlier Thursday, in which a driver’s keys were taken at gunpoint, said sheriff’s spokeswoman Sgt. Norine Plett.
Authorities located the stolen car at the mall and had it under surveillance when they saw a man matching the carjacking suspect’s description approaching the vehicle, Plett said.
Two deputies approached the man. When he pointed a gun at them, “fearing for their safety, both deputies fired several rounds from their duty weapons, striking the suspect in the upper torso,” the department’s statement said.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said. No deputies were injured, and homicide detectives are investigating the shooting.
