Re “Carter Blasts Naysayers at Canal Handoff,” Dec. 15: It is an embarrassment that no one from the current administration (President Clinton, Al Gore or Madeleine Albright) could take the time to show up for this historic event. They should be ashamed, acting like children who had to return one of their favorite toys. Or could it be that they are embarrassed that they have not yet cleaned up the toxic waste they have left behind at the military bases?
It would have been nice for the media to run the entire ceremony; somebody is under the misconception that the citizens of the U.S. would prefer to watch stories on Monica Lewinsky, Linda Tripp and car chases.
