Re “Rampart Probe May Now Affect Over 3,000 Cases,” Dec. 15: Does anyone in Los Angeles County believe and is anyone comforted by the thought that police perjury and corruption are limited to a few officers at the Los Angeles Police Department Rampart station?

The more insidious scandal behind the widening LAPD scandal is that Gil Garcetti’s office is only paying attention to this particular scandal. Garcetti would have us believe that these are the only tainted cases to ever occur on his watch. The shame is that the belated actions of the district attorney, in now dismissing the charges of a few, mean that the systematic abuses by the other corrupt officers of the LAPD will continue, hidden by the public relations show now being staged by the district attorney.
While it is right for Garcetti to reexamine these tainted convictions now, where was he when the defendants in this scandal originally protested their treatment by the LAPD? The shocking truth is that the district attorney still holds the credibility of a corrupt criminal police officer over that of the accused. It was not until one officer spoke that the statements of the accused were taken seriously.
If the district attorney and law enforcement desire to be trusted, they must clean all of their house, not just the very visible front porch.
