Desert Lights

Regarding the problem with desert light pollution (Dec. 14), it would seem that a good solution for security lighting, which would not require continuous illumination, would be to use motion sensors to control the lights. If a large area is to be covered, more than one sensor could be connected to one set of lights. A light suddenly coming on would also call attention to the fact that something is moving in the area being monitored, further discouraging intruders.
This approach could be a significant energy saver, with the savings in energy costs paying for the sensors in a reasonable period of time, if the lights are high wattage. For example, the 1,000-watt security light mentioned in the article probably costs close to $1 a night to operate.
