Camp Pendleton Marines are standing their ground in the face of San Clemente’s request to limit the number of flights at a proposed Marine Corps helicopter training facility.
The City Council voted last week to draft a letter asking the Marines to limit the number of operations at its two proposed helicopter landing fields, to be located 3 1/2 miles from the city limits. Marines spokesman Larry Rannals said the Corps will likely respond to the Jan. 3 deadline set by the city. Regardless, construction of the facility continues as planned, he said. “We’re still dealing with it attorney-to-attorney,” Rannals said.
“We continue to be willing to discuss with the city and respond to their concerns, but at the same time we’re not willing to stop construction and it’s moving for
ward with a plan of having it open in March 2000.”
An environmental assessment conducted by the Marines on the Helicopter Outlying Landing Field, or HOLF, stated the facility will not cause more than the legal limit of 65 decibels of noise over any home. Rannals asserts the Corps has been upfront with its plans to build and operate the facility.
