SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO

A sobriety checkpoint near Mission San Juan Capistrano last weekend resulted in one arrest. Many more drivers had clearly been drinking and driving but were under the legal limit, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

The checkpoint was set up Saturday from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Camino Capistrano. Deputies greeted drivers and probed for signs of drug or alcohol impairment, Sgt. Gus De La Torre said.

“If there’s any detection they’ve been drinking, we’ll do a sobriety test,” De La Torre said. “If nothing, then we send them on their merry way.”

De La Torre said 542 motorists passed through the checkpoint, and 27 of them were scrutinized more closely after showing signs they may have been drinking.
