Jeffrey Esparza; LAPD Detective, Naval Reservist

A rosary will be said tonight for Los Angeles Police Det. Jeffrey Thomas Esparza, who died Saturday at his Sylmar home of an undisclosed illness. He was 35.
Born and raised in San Fernando, Esparza joined the LAPD 11 years ago. At the time of his death, he was supervising an anti-drug, anti-gang team of detectives out of Newton Division, according to Officer Holly Capra with the LAPD’s Employee Assistance Unit. He was also active in the U.S. Naval Reserves.
Esparza is survived by his wife, Lorna; son, Bryan; daughter, Sawyer; sister, Yolanda; and brother, David.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight, with a rosary at 7 p.m., at Pierce Bros. Valhalla Mortuary, 10621 Victory Blvd., North Hollywood.
A funeral Mass will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Ferdinand Catholic Church, 1109 Coronel St., San Fernando. Burial will follow at San Fernando Mission Cemetery.
