School District Auditor Hires 12 Investigators

The top auditor of the Los Angeles Unified School District said Wednesday that he has beefed up his department by hiring 12 investigators.

“The hiring of these investigators shows that we are serious about reducing waste, fraud and abuse in the school district,” said Don Mullinax, director of internal audit and special investigations for the 710,000-student district.

The audit branch currently has only one investigator bearing most of the load of 22 ongoing investigations, Mullinax said.

The new employees include attorneys, certified fraud examiners, private investigators and former LAPD detectives, Mullinax said.

As part of his strategic plan, Mullinax said he needs to add 15 auditors and 21 investigators in the next five years.

A former Senate and Defense Department investigator, Mullinax was hired last January to upgrade the district’s audit branch, which was widely criticized for being understaffed and undertrained.
