Re “UCLA Students Face Discipline in Clashes,” Dec. 18: We have lived in Westwood for 43 years, since 1956. The midnight yell has been obnoxious in its din ever since it originated a few years ago. The violence of its uproar has been increasing, along with the use of explosives, which is frightening to awaken to at midnight.

On the nights of Dec. 15 and 16, the intensity of the chanting was heightened by the reverberation of the constant circling of helicopters flashing their searchlights throughout the neighborhood, lasting over 2 1/2 hours. Then there were the sirens of fire engines and police cars for the fires set in several streets.

I am sure you know all this, but it makes a good case for strong measures against the caught culprits and to prevent a future uproar in another three months.

Never did I believe my alma mater would be an embarrassment to me; however, that is the situation regarding UCLA. What happened to the serious student who wouldn’t be interested in attending a “party school”? No longer can we alumni claim that distinction after the handicapped parking space and final exam episodes. I apologize for my present-day counterparts and hope expulsion proceedings begin.
