A plan to build homes near the Alta Vista golf course was met with widespread support this week when the City Council voted unanimously to approve land use changes for the project.

Council members backed HQT Development’s proposal to build 170 houses on 17.6 acres south of the intersection of Dunnavant Drive and Alta Vista Street. The land had been approved in 1996 for 186 homes.

Residents living near the project area were concerned that the community pool and recreational facilities for the surrounding tracts would become overburdened by the new development. The developer agreed this week to limit pool and clubhouse access to residents of two existing tracts only, said Joyce Rosenthal, the city’s director of development services.
