Pesticide Exposure

Share

Representatives of the state Department of Pesticide Regulation came to our agricultural county last week to tell the farmers that they must move toward using pesticides that are less harmful to people and the environment.

That’s true, but only one side of the coin.

The populace should also be alerted to protect itself from unnecessary exposure to pesticide toxicity. When a school site is brought to them for approval, and that site is in the midst of farmland, will they turn it down as an inappropriate location?

We’ll find out when the Juan Soria Elementary School site comes up for state approval. Will the state say, “No, this location would expose the children and staff to pesticide drift. Moreover, the soil has been contaminated by pesticides for generations and must be cleaned up.”

All of us citizens will be watching the state decision. After all, fair is fair.
