The Police Department will receive $4,000 from the federal Bulletproof Vest Partnership Grant Act of 1998. Police say it was a lot less than expected, as the department recently purchased 70 vests for $35,000. The department provides vests for all of its officers. The federal program provides funding for up to 50%. But police say demand nationwide for vest funds was high this year. The FBI estimates that the risk of a gun-related fatality is 14 times higher for officers who do not wear a vest.
