Break-Ins Continue at Golf Courses

A three-month rash of burglaries at two golf courses continued over the holiday weekend with a loss of $7,500 in clubs, authorities said.

About $13,000 in merchandise and equipment was stolen from the Olivas Park and San Buenaventura courses, both on Olivas Park Drive, authorities said.

The latest break-in occurred Sunday at the Buenaventura pro shop when the security system was bypassed and $7,500 in merchandise was taken, pro shop manager John Barr said.

“They were smart enough to cut off the power, which cut off the videotape,” Barr said.

“Luckily, the alarm had a battery backup or else they would have gotten a lot more.”

On Thursday, employees noticed two golf carts missing from the Olivas Park Golf Course. According to a police report, employees said the carts were probably stolen after Dec. 18.

The Olivas Park pro shop was broken into Oct. 26 and $3,000 worth of clubs were taken. A video camera recorded someone breaking the glass door with a rock and leaving with the merchandise, authorities said.

No arrests have been made in connection with either break-in, authorities said.

Barr said he is working to increase security, including adding new video equipment.

Barr said he’s not replacing any of the items, for now.

“I am not ordering anything until we come up with a better, more secure way of handling golf clubs in the pro shop,” he said.
