Diane M. Caston, a retired teacher, died Sunday at a convalescent hospital in Canoga Park. She was 70.

She was born Sept. 11, 1929, in San Francisco and raised in Vallejo.

In 1947, she moved to Los Angeles and attended UCLA. She graduated with a bachelor of science degree in geography and a bachelor of arts degree in Spanish.

After moving to Sacramento, she began working for the U. S. Geological Survey in 1951 and met her future husband, Homer T. Caston, there. On Feb. 10, 1952, the couple married.

In the fall of that year, they moved to Davis, and he attended the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine.

After he graduated, they lived in Idaho for a short time and then in 1955 they moved to El Centro, where he started a veterinary practice.

She taught school in Imperial Valley and assisted at the veterinary clinic. She also attended San Diego State University and received her teaching credentials.

In 1962, the couple moved to Thousand Oaks. She taught school first for the Las Virgenes school district and then for the Conejo Valley Unified School District for more than 20 years. She retired in 1984.

She was a group leader for 4-H and served on the Ventura County Fair Board.

She was also active in community service, including Rotary Anns, the wives of Westlake Rotary Club members.

She showed horses and was a member of Equestrian Trails Inc. Corral 37.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by daughters Amy Coleman and Carolyn Caston, both of Thousand Oaks, and sisters Julie Casarino of Hollister and Bette Rhinehart of Los Alamitos.

Funeral services are scheduled at 2 p.m. today at Ascension Lutheran Church in Thousand Oaks, with the Rev. Larry Wagner officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Pierce Bros. Valley Oaks Mortuary, Westlake Village.
