Prop. 22

Re “County Board Votes to Oppose State Ballot’s Marriage Initiative,” Dec. 22: Zev Yaroslavsky’s resolution to the Board of Supervisors opposing Prop. 22 (limit on marriage proposition) is a farce. The supervisors should first deal with the county’s woes before they utilize their time opposing propositions that strengthen traditional family values.

Gloria Molina’s comparison of Prop. 187 to Prop. 22 is ill-founded. People opposed 187 because it targeted a particular race. We are born a given race. Race and sexual orientation should not be given the same weight. The scientific community has not determined whether one is born gay. Many homosexuals openly state it is a choice they are proud of. We need to keep in mind that homosexuality is based on an action (that many people find repulsive); race is not. The Board of Supervisors should allow us the courtesy to choose what we want with respect to marriage without undue influence.
