PLACENTIA

The residents of three southwest Placentia neighborhoods handed out 500 fliers Wednesday warning about the dangers of shooting guns in the air on New Year’s Eve.

A drawing of a woman and a child caught in the cross hairs of gun target were tacked up at supermarkets, on neighborhood streets and at the post office.

Councilwoman Maria Moreno said she first got the idea for the fliers several years ago from the Santa Ana Police Department. With 2000 approaching, she felt this New Year’s Eve would be more crowded, more rowdy and more dangerous than ever.

She and others are making sure a grass-roots effort will blanket neighborhoods that typically have reports of gunfire during New Year’s Eve celebrations.

“What we’re trying to do is break a tradition,” she said.
