Attendance at a series of neighborhood dialogues on the future of the west side was lower than expected last week. City officials are hoping more residents will participate in a planning workshop Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the multipurpose room at Rea Elementary School, 661 Hamilton St.

Issues expected to be raised include placing utility lines underground, bringing in a supermarket and adding a police substation. Some residents also want the area turned into a themed commercial zone with big-name businesses and restaurants. Others favor preserving the village atmosphere.

Written comments may be sent to Mike Robinson, principal planner in the Planning Department, at City Hall, P.O. Box 1200, Costa Mesa, CA 92628-1200.
