* SB XXIV, Denver (head coach) lost to San Francisco, 55-10--Broncos give up 34 consecutive points as 49ers set Super Bowl record for points in a game.

* SB XXXIII, Atlanta (head coach) lost to Denver, 34-19--After leading NFL in turnover margin, Reeves’ Falcons commit four in first Super Bowl game.

FIRST TIME IN SUPER BOWL

How teams did in their first Super Bowl appearance (first-time teams are capitalized):

Super Bowl I, GREEN BAY 35, KANSAS CITY 10--This was the first Super Bowl, so naturally, these teams had never played in one before. Packers outscored the Chiefs 21-0 in second half.

Super Bowl II, Green Bay 33, OAKLAND 14--Packers dominated the game, which was the last one for Coach Vince Lombardi.

Super Bowl III, NEW YORK JETS 16, BALTIMORE 7--Joe Namath came through on his guarantee, and Colt quarterback Earl Morrall had three passes intercepted.

Super Bowl IV, Kansas City 23, MINNESOTA 7--The first of four Super Bowl losses for the Vikings.

Super Bowl V, Baltimore 16, DALLAS 13--The Cowboys led at the half, but two turnovers in the second half led to 10 Colt points.

Super Bowl VI, Dallas 24, MIAMI 3--In their first appearance, the Dolphins become the first team (and still the only team) to not score a touchdown.

Super Bowl VII, Miami 14, WASHINGTON 7--Redskins were outplayed by the Dolphins, who were completing a 17-0 season. Washington’s only touchdown came with 2:07 remaining, thanks to a turnover by Dolphin kicker Garo Yepremian.

Super Bowl IX, PITTSBURGH 16, Minnesota 6--After both teams struggled through the first half (Pittsburgh led, 2-0), the Steelers took control in the second half, led by running back Franco Harris, who had 158 yards rushing.

Super Bowl XII, Dallas 27, DENVER 10--The Cowboys converted two interceptions into 10 points. Here’s all you need to know: The Bronco quarterback in the second half--Norris Weese.

Super Bowl XIV, Pittsburgh 31, LOS ANGELES RAMS 19--The Rams led after three quarters, 19-17, but a 73-yard touchdown pass play from Terry Bradshaw to John Stallworth took the wind out of their sails.

Super Bowl XV, Oakland 27, PHILADELPHIA 10--Raiders jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead, and the Eagles never recovered.

Super Bowl XVI, SAN FRANCISCO 26, CINCINNATI 21--The first matchup of first-time teams since Super Bowl III was also one of the better Super Bowls. Ray Wersching kicked four field goals for the 49ers.

Super Bowl XX, CHICAGO 46, NEW ENGLAND 10--The Patriots scored first, but the Bears scored second, and third, and fourth, and fifth, and sixth. . . .

Super Bowl XXI, NEW YORK GIANTS 39, Denver 20--Broncos led, 10-9, at halftime, but the Giants scored the first 24 points of the second half.

Super Bowl XXV, New York Giants 20, BUFFALO 19--Bills lost when Scott Norwood’s 47-yard field goal attempt at the end of the game went wide right.

Super Bowl XXIX, San Francisco 49, SAN DIEGO 26--Steve Young threw for six touchdowns against the overmatched Chargers.

Super Bowl XXXIII, Denver 34, ATLANTA 19--Whenever the Falcons came close to scoring when it counted, a turnover killed them.

Note: First-time teams are 6-15. When playing teams that have been in a Super Bowl before, first-time teams are 2-11.
