Curry Sparks CSUN at Northern Arizona

Edniesha Curry scored 16 points to lead Cal State Northridge over Northern Arizona, 56-44, in a Big Sky Conference women’s basketball game Saturday night at Flagstaff, Ariz.

Keisha Harris had 12 rebounds and six points for Northridge and Lynda Amari had 10 rebounds and six points.

The Matadors (14-6, 8-2 in Big Sky play) led, 28-25, at halftime.

RaeAnn West had 14 points and Liz Metsers had 11 for Northern Arizona (9-11, 3-7).

In another women’s game:

Bakersfield 63, Valley 62--Jessica Saunders scored on a rebound with seven seconds remaining to lift the Renegades (16-10, 5-3) in a Western State Conference game at Valley (16-2, 3-4).

Tynisha Howze had 13 points for Valley, Chante Gifford scored 12 and Patricia Miller had 11.

BASEBALL

Ventura 7, Pierce 6--Paul Engel’s single drove in Aaron Dixon with the winning in the bottom of the eighth in the opener for both teams.

Freshman Ryan Cope, from Westlake High, had three hits, including a home run, and knocked in three runs for Pierce.

Canyons 6, East L.A. 4--Chris Coash hit a solo home run to lead off the eighth inning and secure a round-robin victory in the L.A. Harbor tournament.

The homer, one of two hits by Coash, stretched a 4-3 edge for the Cougars (1-1), who also got two hits from Cory Briggs and Anthony Trejo.

Winning pitcher Steve Lane (1-0) threw 7 1/3 innings, allowing five hits, striking out four and walking one.

Oxnard 4, Citrus 3--Robert Avila’s three-run home run in the eighth inning lifted the Condors in a Citrus-Rio Hondo tournament game at Citrus (2-1).

Brodie Reyes and Brett Ermilio (1-0) combined on a four-hitter for Oxnard (1-0).

Santa Ana 13, Valley 1--Marc Lindop and Josh Highsmith each had two hits for Valley (0-3) in a South Coast tournament game.

Nick Lombard and Ed Jung each had two hits and a triple in Valley’s 12-2 loss to Cerritos earlier in the day.

Golden West 13, Antelope Valley 1--Curt Raine led off the second inning with a home run for the Marauders (0-3) in an Orange Coast tournament round-robin loss.

The Rustlers (2-0) scored six runs in the third inning off K.J. Goodwin (0-1).

The Master’s 14-16, Simpson 0-0--The Mustangs pounded 27 hits in the sweep at Master’s.

Starter Rob Avila (1-0) allowed one hit and struck out seven in four innings in the seven-inning first game.

In the second game, halted after 4 1/2 innings because of darkness, Matt Herwaldt had three hits, including a two-run home run in an 11-run second inning.

TRACK AND FIELD

Flagstaff Invitational--Marcus Bivines, Clinte Motley and Brandi Prieto each set Cal State Northridge indoor records at Northern Arizona.

Bivines clocked 6.68 seconds to finish second in the men’s 60-meter dash and sophomore Motley won the triple jump in a school-best 51 feet 7 3/4 inches.

Motley cleared 6-8 in his only attempt to win the high jump.

Prieto won the women’s triple jump with a leap of 41-6.

Reno Invitational--Nancy James clocked 4:57.35 in the women’s mile to set a Northridge record in the meet at Nevada Reno.

Northridge’s Lisa Rugenstein and Jennifer Capeheart placed second and third in the women’s pole vault, each with a school-record 11-5 3/4, which is also a provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA indoor championships. Rugenstein was awarded second on fewer misses.

SOFTBALL

Cal Baptist 5-3, Cal Lutheran 4-5--Julie Gerughty had four hits in the nonconference doubleheader for host Cal Lutheran, including a home run.

Christine Halcomb (1-0) went the distance in the second game for Cal Lutheran (1-1), allowing seven hits and striking out five.
