Class on Parenting Issues to Be Taught in Mandarin

The Arcadia Unified School District is offering sessions in Mandarin on cross-cultural parenting issues.

“Sometimes cultural differences between Asians and Americans present conflict in the home,” said Marilyn Daleo, a district spokeswoman. “We find that many parents speak English but are more comfortable hearing about issues in their own language.”

Many children are confused by experiencing Chinese culture at home and American culture at school, said Annie Yuen, a parent who helped coordinate the sessions. “We want to explain how to use the strengths of both cultures.”

The sessions will be presented by Rosa Zee, former school board president in the San Marino Unified School District; Mimi Burgdorf-Hennessy, deputy superintendent of Arcadia schools; and Chinese community leaders, including Yuen, an immigrant and a parent of two.

“Many parents feel culturally isolated,” Yuen said. “We want to share a set of parenting skills we think might work.”

Sessions are scheduled to be held at 7 p.m. Feb. 24, March 10 and 24, April 7 and 21 and May 5 at the Arcadia Community Center, 365 Campus Drive, Arcadia. Admission is free and is also open to parents outside the district.
