Love and the Solo Goddess

For some lucky goddesses, Valentine’s Day will consist of fragrant flowers, a heartfelt card and a day of love with a man who cherishes her for her inner spirit and emotions.

Then there are the rest of us, who will be solo.

Perhaps you’re like me and Mr. Right turned out to be astrologically incorrect. Or maybe you’re like a friend of mine and your last 15 blind dates at Starbucks have only yielded a caffeine addiction.

To me, Valentine’s Day is a celebration of love that isn’t just for lovers. It’s a day to express love to others and to yourself. So this year, I sent Valentine’s Day cards to my mother, my 97-year-old grandfather, my single goddess friends and to myself.

My inner self-love quest led me to read “Creative Visualization,” by Shakti Gawain. I soon discovered that even Oprah practices creative visualization--she is quoted as saying, “I do believe and I have seen in my own life that creative visualization works.”

In “Creative Visualization,” the author suggests visualizing exactly what you desire in your life. For example, if you would like to manifest a great date, you first visualize it and then treat yourself the way you would like to be treated. So that’s exactly what I did. I created my own dream date.

First, I sent myself a dozen roses and acted surprised when they arrived. (“For me? Oh, you shouldn’t have. . . . OK, I am worth it.”)

Then I called my answering machine from a pay phone and asked myself out for a Valentine’s dinner. (I was a little disappointed that I wasn’t in to take the call.)

Next, I got all dressed up and went to a romantic Italian restaurant, where I had a delicious meal. Even though I was self-conscious at first about being alone, the Italian waiters made sure I felt welcomed.

The evening was wonderful because I felt like I had known myself my whole life. I told funny stories that made me laugh, cherished my feelings and discovered I was astrologically compatible.

At the end of the night, I was very gracious. I walked myself to the door and said good night without taking advantage of myself! Before I went to bed, I relaxed with a candlelight bath. As I fell asleep I could have sworn I heard an angel whispering “I love you” in my ear and felt the tender touch of a celestial wing on my cheek. I felt like a goddess.

And the next day, I called when I said I would. It was a perfect date.

The best part is, that afternoon in yoga class an attractive man commented on my beautiful cobra posture and asked me out for dinner at the same restaurant.

Thank goddess for creative visualization!
