What: 1999 Southern California Directory of Golf

Price: $15

Key components of the avid golfer’s survival kit: Clubs and shoes in the car trunk to meet unexpected must-play-now urges, jacket or rain gear because playing in bad weather is better than not playing at all, and a copy of the Southern California Directory of Golf in the glove compartment for, well, lots of stuff.

This 320-page booklet lists more than 500 private and public golf courses in Southern California and Baja and has the basic information you need about them: Green fees, phone numbers, length, par, slope ratings, host pros . . . and perhaps most important, directions.

If you hop around from one course to another, this is the book to help you get there on time. Leave home for that new layout in the Inland Empire without it and you risk missing your starting time.

The directory, produced by the Southern California Golf Assn. and the Southern California chapter of the PGA, includes pages of information on the SCGA and SCPGA, much of which is of use primarily to those involved with those two organizations. But there are also lists of former champions of major SCGA events, records at each course in the Southland and slope tables that convert your index to a course handicap.

What do Duffy Waldorf, Bobby Clampett, Mark O’Meara, John Cook, Johnny Miller and Ken Venturi have in common? Each won the California Amateur. You can look it up.

SCGA members at the start of the year receive the book free. To buy the directory, send a check for $15, payable to the SCGA, to: Southern California Directory of Golf, Southern California Golf Assn., 3740 Cahuenga Blvd., North Hollywood, Calif. 91604.
