HUNTINGTON BEACH
City Council members say they need time to review two actions aimed at derailing a Wal-Mart store at the closed Crest View School site before taking action. A group of Fountain Valley residents recently filed a lawsuit against Huntington Beach--the same day the Fountain Valley City Council filed an appeal of the Huntington Beach Planning Commission’s decision to issue permits to the giant retailer.
The Save the Open Space and Parks Alliance, or STOP Alliance, is suing over what it says was an inadequate environmental review process. The group wants to overturn the Huntington Beach City Council’s decision to rezone the site from residential to commercial. Huntington Beach Councilman Dave Garofalo said he believes the city’s environmental review process was sound.
The Fountain Valley opposition stems from traffic and noise concerns. City leaders will present their appeal to the Huntington Beach City Council at a hearing tentatively set for March 15.
The Arnel Retail Group, which represents Wal-Mart, also has filed an appeal, which will be addressed at the hearing. The company opposes some restrictions on the project.
