The City Council appears receptive to some Freedom Homes residents’ requests to rethink a city committee’s decision against removing some Canyon Park trees that are blocking their ocean views. The eucalyptus trees, which were planted in Canyon Park about a decade ago and have not been trimmed since, have been chipping away at residents’ views of the ocean, sunsets and Catalina Island.

The Parks, Recreation Facilities and Parkways Commission recommended last fall that the trees not be removed. Commission members said granting the residents’ request would not solve the problem because the majority of the offending trees are on private property in Newport Beach.

The council approved continuing the matter for 90 days to allow staff to research the issue.
