Question: I’m drowning in clutter. How can I minimize it?

Answer: The first step in addressing the issue of clutter is to make an assessment of your belongings. Ask yourself, “What purpose is this article serving me, and of what value or importance does it hold?” You may realize that the object does not have the emotional or sentimental value it once did.

Getting rid of this excess matter can leave you feeling liberated.

Also, when too many items are crowded together, the greatest pieces become overshadowed or get lost among lesser items. Negative or free space is important because it helps define and accent prized possessions.

If you still find that you cannot part with many of your things, here are some ideas that can help eliminate the appearance of clutter:

* Group similar objects together. Groupings lend rhythm, create focal points and free up space.

* Install shelving. This is a way to free up table and counter space. Arrange them to create a large display wall.

You can buy ready-made decorative or unfinished shelving at most hardware and craft stores.

* Store items in the garage and bring them into your home occasionally to create new looks. When placing any wooden items in the garage, make sure they are well oiled to keep them from drying out. If you do not have a garage, a steamer trunk or an armoire will do.
