Disney Ad Defended by Baptist Editors
Baptist editors in North Carolina and Virginia are defending their decision to run ads for a youth event at Walt Disney World even though the national denomination is boycotting the Walt Disney Co.
The ad for Passport Inc., which is run by Baptists but has no direct link with Disney, ran the first week of February in Baptist newspapers in the two states. The advertisement touts five-day trips in June to the Magic Kingdom, which can “provide the ultimate learning institute for your church group.”
In 1997, the Southern Baptist Convention voted for a boycott of Disney theme parks, ABC and ESPN television programming and Miramax films, due in part to the company’s “gay-friendly” policies.
