Modano Shines for Stars

Mike Modano scored three goals as the Dallas Stars stretched their winning streak to five games with a 5-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks Friday night at Dallas.

Modano notched his 18th, 19th and 20th goals of the season, rebounding from a subpar effort in Wednesday night’s 2-1 win over Florida with his second hat trick of the season and sixth of his career.

Brett Hull added his 24th goal, and Star enforcer Brent Severyn scored his first of the season.

New York Rangers 6, Pittsburgh 1--Kevin Stevens had two goals and an assist and Petr Nedved added a goal and an assist as the Rangers suddenly turned tough at New York.

The Rangers, who had lost seven of their last eight games at Madison Square Garden, held a 4-0 lead after two periods.

Detroit 3, New Jersey 1--Steve Yzerman scored two goals at Detroit and the Red Wings ran their winning streak to six games.

Colorado 4, Nashville 4--Joe Sakic completed his seventh career hat trick with 1:23 left in regulation, but the Avalanche’s league-high road winning streak still ended at seven games at Nashville.

Sergei Krivokrasov scored two power-play goals as the Predators built a 4-2 lead early in the third.

Tampa Bay 4, Phoenix 2--Chris Gratton and Benoit Hogue, who had two goals, scored 1:13 apart late in the third period at Tampa, Fla., as the Lightning ended a 10-game winless streak.

Buffalo 4, San Jose 2--Dwayne Roloson, starting in place of the injured Dominik Hasek, made 30 saves and Michal Grosek scored the winning goal for the Sabres at Buffalo.

Former NHL owner John Spano was arrested by federal agents in New York after he was accused of writing two worthless rent checks for $10,000, Spano’s attorney said. Spano has been awaiting sentencing for about 17 months on federal fraud charges stemming from his aborted 1997 purchase of the New York Islanders. He is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
