Trojans Need a Big Finish

Share

Heading into the final two weeks of the season, USC needs a stretch run bordering on miraculous to have any chance at a postseason berth, namely in the NIT.

The Trojans, who have yet to string together two Pacific 10 Conference victories, would need to win at least three of their last four games. That means defeating Washington State at home and Arizona State in Tempe, and upsetting Washington at the Sports Arena or Arizona in Tucson.

Three victories would give them a 15-12 record, 7-11 in conference play, which could push them as high as sixth or seventh in the standings. The recent victory at Stanford would help, having improved their RPI rating 20 or so spots.

Coach Henry Bibby isn’t sure what to think of his team’s chances.

Some days, Bibby plays it cool: “Not an interest of mine. In the NIT or not in the NIT, we’re still making progress.”

Other days he seems hopeful: “Who knows what can happen? You get some wins and the tournament committee has to take a look at us. That’s a goal we’re shooting for. That would tickle me pink if we could do that.”

Coming up: Thursday vs. Washington, Saturday vs. Washington State.
