New Test May Identify Some Bosses From Hell

Workers of the world, take heart! Soon your company could be vetting members of its managerial staff for a hidden “dark side” to their personalities, courtesy of a new psychological test. Invented by a British consulting firm from real-life data of bosses who have “gone off the rails,” the test is the first to address the Mr. Hyde side of those in managerial positions.

Distrust, arrogance and more--all will be revealed once your boss sits down with the “Hogan Development Survey,” report the authors, of Psychological Consultancy Ltd., at a recent meeting of the British Psychological Society. And that, they say, is important. After all, people who give great job interviews may still be mean sons-of-guns to work for. And, if you choose to use the test on staff you’ve already hired, you can retrain them to help them brush up on their social skills.

Bad bosses--An item in Booster Shots on Feb. 22 about a psychological test designed to detect “bad” managers gave the wrong name of the test’s inventor. The Hogan Development Survey was created by psychologists Robert and Joyce Hogan of Hogan Assessment Systems in Tulsa, Okla.
