Opportunities for Volunteering

* The Children’s Nature Institute is seeking people to lead walks to introduce children, including disabled and disadvantaged kids, to nature. Volunteers, who will also learn about local plants, animals and Native American culture, must take weekly classes from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesdays, beginning this week through March 31, at Temescal Gateway Park in Pacific Palisades; missed classes can be made up. Any guide younger than 18 must be accompanied by a guardian during walks. A $40 donation to help cover the cost of materials is requested but is not mandatory. * El Centro de Amistad, a nonprofit agency that helps low-income families in the Valley, is seeking people to serve on its board. The organization needs business people who are active in the community or individuals with experience serving on boards, with fund-raising or with dealing with city or county governments. Those who have legal or financial knowledge or expertise in a building trade are also needed. The organization’s board of directors meets the second Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. at the group’s offices in San Fernando or Canoga Park; the meetings last about two hours. * Penny Lane, a nonprofit group that helps abused and emotionally disturbed teens, needs volunteers for several of its programs. Its fund-raising and special events committee needs help with mailings, phone calls, donor development and special events planning. Mentors are also needed for teens who have no close family or friends. Volunteers who can provide one-on-one or small-group tutoring are encouraged to apply.
