* A free tax seminar for employers will be held by the state Employment Development Department from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the Newbury Park branch of the Thousand Oaks Library at 2331 Borchard Road. Topics will be the difference between an employee and an independent contractor, and state and federal payroll requirements.

* “How to Get Access to Capital,” a workshop by the Gold Coast Small Business Development Center, will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday at 5700 Ralston St., Suite 310, Ventura. Topics will include traditional and nontraditional sources of funds, SBA loan programs, bank criteria for approving loans and the basics of financial management.

* A free seminar for food-handling businesses that want to seek SERVSAFE certification from the state, which will be required by next year, will be held the first Tuesday of every month from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Gold Coast Small Business Development Center, 5700 Ralston St., Suite 310, Ventura. The seminar is sponsored by SQI Food Technology Lab in Oxnard.

* A business development series will begin March 6, running from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Oxnard College Center for Economic & Community Development at 4000 S. Rose Ave., Oxnard. The first seminar is on “Starting and Operating a New Business.” The five-seminar series will conclude April 10.
