Other earnings, excluding one-time gains and charges unless noted:

* Lycos Inc., the No. 3 Internet search service, reported a loss of $1.48 million, or 3 cents a share, for the fiscal second quarter, contrasted with a profit of $301,000, or 1 cent, a year ago. Revenue surged 143% to $30.6 million as its Web sites drew more advertisers.

* Marsh & McLennan Cos., the world’s largest insurance broker and owner of mutual fund manager Putnam Investments, said fourth-quarter net income jumped 30% to $186 million, or 70 cents a share, well above estimates of 63 cents. Revenue grew 20% to $1.9 billion, with revenue at Putnam and the consulting group stronger than expected.

* JB Oxford Holdings Inc. reported fourth-quarter profit of $1.7 million, or 8 cents a share, reversing a year-ago loss of $734,000, or 5 cents. The Beverly Hills-based company cited strength in its discount and online brokerage operations and cost controls for the performance. Revenue rose 21% to $19.4 million. The discount brokerage also said it planned to double its advertising spending in 1999 to $6 million to attract new accounts.

* Music retailer Trans World Entertainment Corp.’s fourth-quarter net income jumped 44% to $30.7 million, with per-share earnings up 34% to 90 cents, well above estimates of 80 cents. Revenue grew 11% to $267.8 million as same-store sales rose 6%.

* Waste Management Inc. said its operating profit more than quadrupled to $361.1 million, or 58 cents a share, from $91.9 million, or 16 cents, beating estimates by 2 cents. Revenue rose 5% to $3.24 billion. The results were boosted by merger-related cost-cutting.
