Event to Aid Immigrants in Filing Taxes, Banking

The Panorama Mall will host a free event Saturday and Sunday to help undocumented immigrants learn how to file taxes and deal with banks.

Representatives from two banks and an immigrant rights advocate will be on hand.

Participants without Social Security numbers will learn how to obtain IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification numbers for declaring or claiming taxes, said Felipe Kofman, an immigrant rights activist who will be at the event.

“There is a humongous population of undocumented people who are victimized because of the fact they can’t open a bank account,” Kofman said.

He said theft rings target these immigrants, who often keep their savings at home.

Representatives from United PanAm Bank and Washington Mutual Bank will be at the mall Saturday to open savings and checking accounts for people who do not have Social Security numbers, but have IRS identification numbers, he said.

Attendees should bring identification for processing applications for IRS identification numbers, which cost $10.

There is no age requirement to apply.

The event will run from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the center of the mall, 8401 Van Nuys Blvd.
